Hosting a Halloween Party: Food
Halloween is my favorite holiday. Fall and winter are my favorite. I think all the decorations and festivities are just too exciting. Every year, we host a Halloween party, called the StuCrew Boo Bash. In a previous post, I shared some of my favorite party decorations. In this post, I’ll share a few fun food ideas for a Halloween party.
While decorations are essential, themed food will kick your party up a notch. Sometimes just displaying your food in a thematic way will set the mood.
As I said in another post, we have a coffin that we use as our buffet display. It is a show-stopper.
When the StuCrew Boo Bash first began, in 2015, I took care of all the food. Two wonderful friends helped me feed around 90 people. It was exhausting. As the years went on, I started relinquishing some control over the food. In 2019, the party was potluck style. However you do it, is up to you.
Halloween Party Food
Now onto the good stuff. Here are some of my favorite bites to share:
Mummy Hot Dogs
Mummy hot dogs are SO easy to make. And the kids LOVE them! You’ll need Crescent Roll dough and hotdogs. Roll out the dough and cut it in long strips. Wrap the dough around the hotdogs. Don’t stress about making them look perfect, Mummies are old and gross after all. Place your uncooked Mummies onto a greased baking sheet and pop them in the oven (350°) for about 12-15 minutes. Move the cooked Mummies to a plate to cool. When they are cool, you can add mustard eyes if you want.
Boo-nanas
These are so simple. Peel and cut bananas in half. Add 2 chocolate chips for eyes.
Deviled Eggs
I mean, it’s in the name! How could you have a Halloween party without deviled eggs?!
Honestly, these are a tricky one for me. I love deviled eggs, but my boys are terribly allergic to eggs. Before Remy was born, these were not a problem to serve. Riley simply avoided them, and he had no interest in trying them or eating off anyone else’s plate. Remy, on the other hand, is troublesome. Toddlers love to try things and sneak food from anywhere… so I don’t think the eggs will be at our party this year.
As you can see in the photo above, one year I dyed the yolks green. I tried a few different color combos. I was trying for orange. But the green turned out the best. You could even add avocado to the yolk mixture to get a more vibrant green.
For the perfect yolk mixture, you want to use Miracle Whip, yellow mustard and sweet relish.
Cheese Balls & Dips
I’m a sucker for a delicious cheese ball. Of course, presentation is half the battle. We eat with our eyes first. Use a plastic mold or shape it like a pumpkin.
I also believe the key to good party food is portability. Guests want to walk around and mingle, so the food should be easily eaten on the move. Dips are great. Plus, you can feel good about eating fresh fruits and veggies. Some of my faves include: buffalo chicken dip, spinach dip, caramel sauce.
I used tiny pumpkins for these trays. The spinach dip is getting “vomitted” out of a baby pumpkin. The caramel and ranch are in bowls placed inside small pumpkins.
