Episode 3: Riley’s Origin Story
Riley’s origin story… sounds like the makings of a Marvel superhero. Maybe it is. That’d be really cool.
I wish I could just say, “Well, we gave him a bite of egg. He had a reaction, and then we knew he had an allergy to egg.” Unfortunately, that is not how we figured out Riley is allergic to eggs.
Poor guy.
So, it all started when he was really little. On his first birthday, he emulated the exorcist flick with a horrible display of projectile vomiting after nibbling on his cake. We did the typical smash cake thing, wanted to see our little guy dive into some Publix bakery cake – Lord knows his older sister liked those (she was known as the icing monster for a few years, but that’s a story for another time).
Picture this: We have family and a few close friends over, eat dinner, chat, presents at some point, then it’s cake time. We stick Riley in the highchair and put the cake in front of him. He digs in. Almost immediately, he regrets it. We, the awesomely good parents that we are, are completely oblivious to the look of horror on his face. We are just cheering and decide to pose for this photo:
Awe. So cute. Happy cake day.
Then, it all comes up. ALL of it. More than I thought was possible for such a little human. I remember it being blue.
So gross…
And still completely oblivious to the possibility of a food allergy.
