Hosting a Halloween Party: Decorations
Almost every year, for the past 8, I have hosted a Halloween party. We lovingly refer to our’s as the StuCrew Boo Bash. It’s one of my favorite parties. I’ve always loved Halloween the most.
To throw the perfect Halloween party, you’ll need a few key things: great decorations, yummy food, and party people. This post will cover the decorations to set your party off right! I will include links at the bottom of the post.
Halloween Decorations
One of the best things about any holiday is the decor. It does not matter which holiday, transforming your normal space into something magical sets the mood. I LOVE it. Halloween decor usually shows up in the stores at the end of August. Stu does not like it if I decorate before the 1st weekend of September. He says anything before that is too early.
I transform everything. Some of our framed photos get replaced with Halloween pics. We added these “bloody” stickers to keep kids out of our office during the party. The 3-D bats are SO fun! Target usually has a great selection of wall decals.
Before we begin setting up for the party, I figure out where we want people to congregate. Should the party be inside? Will the weather be nice enough outside? In 2017 & 2018, the weather in south Florida was horrendous on the Boo Bash night, so we planned for the party to be indoors. I’ve hosted this party inside, outside, in the basement, combo in/out. It all works. When I have my place in mind, Stu helps we put the coffin in place.
Yes, we have a coffin. It’s amazing. Might be my favorite piece ever. My Dad made it a long time ago for a Halloween party my Mom hosted. It is the pièce de résistance. It’s a show-stopper. The coffin is my buffet. Dad outfitted it with a special wood piece that I can lay certain bowls and platters in.
The tables are all covered. Leave no table naked. For the buffet tables, I use linen tablecloths. White, black, Halloween designed, it’s up to you. The coffin usually sits on a black skull tablecloth I picked up at Target a few years ago. The rest of the buffet is dressed in white linen, sometimes a black spiderweb-lace is used on top (technically, the spiderweb thing belongs to my mom).
For the tables that guests will use, I adorn them in black or orange plastic table cloths. These make clean up a breeze – roll all the table trash together and throw away! Trust me, you will thank me at the end of the night. My center pieces are simple pumpkins… Sometimes they are tiny real ones, but I like the fake, light up ones too. It gets dark early on Halloween (unless you are in Florida), so the extra light on the tables is nice.
The easiest way to create a mood for your Halloween party is to use white sheets (or white plastic table cloths) to cover furniture you don’t want seen. Or you can use these sheets to create a creepy wall backdrop. On some, I splattered a bit of red paint.
We love our inflatables! My kids dubbed them “floaties” a long time ago, so that is what they are in our world. Our Halloween floats make their appearance in early October. They will start in the front yard, but for the party this year, we might move the giant Minion to the backyard. He’s awesome. People love getting their pic with him.
Past this stuff, just have fun with your Halloween party decorations! Leave no space untouched. I change out some of the pictures we have hanging in the house. The kitchen gets a Halloween facelift. Our regular throw blankets are replaced with Halloween ones.
Decorating the outside of the house is just as fun and important. Here are some pics of what our outdoor Halloween party decorations have looked like over the years:
