Why Is It Important to Read Every Label
Do you have food allergies in your household? I cannot stress this enough: It is SO important to read every label… every single time! Do not just take the packaging at face value, read each ingredient and read the processing plant information.
Both of my boys have egg allergies. I am not sure how that happened at all. I ate eggs literally every day when I was pregnant (thanks gestational diabetes). Anyway, I have had to navigate around eggs for more than a decade now.
I am not a doctor or the authority on food allergies. For more information, please visit the Food Allergy Research & Education website. They are an excellent resource. If you suspect a food allergy, see an allergist as soon as possible.
One of the biggest disappointments for me (well, inconvenience really) has been the fact that one of the boys is not allowed to eat anything that was even prepared on shared equipment. This means we have things like special pans and utensils… and it also makes dining out an absolute maternal nightmare. But those are different posts, see here: Eating Out with Food Allergies & Eating at Home with Food Allergies.
When I go grocery shopping, I tend to gravitate toward vegan things… logic says there will be no egg in a vegan product. I have even taken Riley to a vegan bakery before. I was excited to find these vegan eggroll wrappers. Personally, I love eggrolls. And I thought this is great, I can make a whole new genre of food for the boys to try.
Imagine my disappointment to read the back of the package and find that these are prepared at a plant that also processes egg product.
The mental strain and stress of food shopping and preparation is real. I find it disheartening that even vegan items are potentially off the list.
Anyone know how to make egg(less)roll wrappers from scratch? Or do you know a completely egg-free alternative to eggroll wrappers? Send them my way if you do!
